Review of the HP EliteBook 8 G1a 16″: A Powerful Laptop for Demanding Work
The HP EliteBook 8 G1a 16 is a new generation of business laptops from HP. It builds on the well-known EliteBook 800 series and is aimed primarily at managers and professionals who require high performance, reliability, and strong security.
It is a 16-inch work laptop designed for intensive multitasking, working with multiple monitors, and frequent video conferencing. The model also meets the Copilot+ PC standard and includes an integrated AI accelerator (NPU) for more efficient use of artificial intelligence tools.
Design and Features
The notebook uses a thin, all-metal chassis with a thickness of approximately 15.5 mm. Despite the larger display, the weight remains around 1.76 kg, so it is still highly portable. The build quality feels very solid and matches the premium class of business laptops.
The keyboard offers comfortable key travel, backlighting, and spill resistance. Compared to the previous generation, the touchpad is larger and provides more space for gestures.
The port selection includes:
- 2× Thunderbolt 4
- 2× USB-C
- 1× USB-A
- HDMI 2.1
- Audio jack
Modern wireless connectivity is also included, with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and optionally a 5G modem.
Display and Video Calls
The notebook features a 16″ IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920 × 1200 pixels. The panel offers brightness of up to around 400 nits and full sRGB coverage, which is sufficient for office work and basic graphics tasks.
A major upgrade is the 5 MP webcam with an infrared sensor for Windows Hello. The camera uses AI features such as automatic framing and background blur, processed by the integrated NPU.
Audio is handled by stereo speakers with Poly certification and a pair of microphones with environmental noise reduction.
Performance and Hardware
The tested configuration uses the AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 250 processor with eight cores and boost speeds of up to 5.1 GHz.
The processor delivers performance comparable to last year’s Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS model and easily handles demanding multitasking, analytical applications, and work with large datasets.
The notebook is equipped with:
- 32 GB DDR5 RAM
- 1 TB NVMe SSD (PCIe 4.0)
Graphics are handled by the integrated AMD Radeon 780M, which comfortably manages office graphics workloads, multi-monitor setups, and light video editing.
Security
The notebook offers strong security features, including:
- TPM 2.0
- Facial recognition login
- HP Wolf Security platform
- Support for the Secured-Core PC standard
This makes it suitable even for working with sensitive corporate data.
Verdict
The HP EliteBook 8 G1a 16 ranks among the most interesting business laptops in its category. It offers high performance, a quality display, modern connectivity, and advanced security.
Its strengths also include strong video conferencing features and integrated AI capabilities. Minor compromises include the 1200p display resolution and the absence of a dedicated GPU, which is not a major issue for a work-focused laptop.
For demanding professionals, it is a very well-balanced productivity tool.
